Title: Thermal conductivity in ISOL target materials

Abstract: Presentation of Ms. Mia Au's research towards her MSc (eng phys UBC) into ISOL target material properties with focus on thermal conductivity.
Hitting an ISOL target material with accelerated particles generates heat and reaction products which then diffuse and effuse through the target material before they are released for ionization and extraction. The target material temperature dominates the release process and is limited by heat generated from beam interactions. Heat is dissipated from the beam spot through the target material, making the effective thermal conductivity of the target material critical for isotope production. Specifically-engineered microstructures have the potential to achieve better release properties. To address the thermal challenges in target material, a deeper understanding of the thermal conductivity of these engineered materials is required.
This talk will describe a numerical method for evaluating effective thermal conductivity, a steady-state numerical-experimental method used to study beta-SiC target materials, and a new experimental apparatus for effective thermal conductivity.
