Title: Mu2e with a TWIST
Abstract: This talk will cover two topics. The Mu2e experiment under construction at Fermilab will search for coherent, neutrino-less conversion of muons into electrons in the field of a nucleus with a sensitivity improvement of a factor of 10,000 over existing limits. Such a charged lepton flavor-violating reaction probes new physics at a scale unavailable by direct searches at either present or planned high energy colliders. The physics motivation, design and current status of the experiment will be presented.
Modeling of one of the sources of expected detector hit rates in Mu2e brought to the fore the lack of data on emission of charged particles following nuclear muon capture. In addition to their importance for Mu2e, these data are valuable for validating nuclear models in the energy range below 100 MeV. A high precision TWIST spectrometer developed for a precise measurement of positive muon Michel parameters also acquired a small dataset with negative muons some years ago. I will show a novel unfolding approach used to analyze this dataset and extract the momentum spectra of ejected protons and deuterons in a new kinematic range, down to 3.4 MeV proton kinetic energy compared to 40 MeV in existing literature, and present the most precise total yields of these particles on aluminum.
