Title:     Advanced Accelerators for Society, from Nuclear Medicine to Safe Nuclear Power

Abstract: Accelerators play a vastly important and rapidly expanding role in society from national security, and environmental solutions to energy and food safety, to ground-breaking advances in medicine, next-generation radiopharmaceuticals, and radiation oncology. The rationale and background for national security, radioisotope production, accelerator-driven reactors including waste burners, and medicine will be presented followed by a more technical discussion of accelerator evolution targeting these applications. Specifications for individual applications will be translated and expanded in terms of accelerator concepts, design approach, and, in some cases, engineering details. Additionally, a short summary of a workshop on a ground-breaking modality, FLASH radiation therapy for cancer, will be presented. This talk is intended to touch on highlights of important and upcoming accelerator innovations and future applications that directly benefit society, the environment, and our quality of life.
