Title: Heavy element nucleosynthesis in the era of multi-messenger observations
Abstract: Multi-messenger astronomy provides unprecedented windows into the inner workings of astrophysical events. For example gravitational wave signals coupled with electromagnetic counterparts can constrain the nature of neutron stars and nucleosynthesis in mergers. Concurrently, nuclear theory and experiment are undergoing their own revolutions and enhancing their reach to explore more heavy, exotic nuclei such as those synthesized by the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Additionally, aided by advancements in computational techniques, simulations of astrophysical events such as neutron star mergers and supernovae are refining our understanding of the outflows from explosive events. This simultaneous progress across disciplines can be leveraged to address fundamental open questions in nuclear astrophysics. In this colloquium we will discuss r-process studies that synergize efforts from multiple disciplines in order to investigate the origin of the heaviest elements observed in nature. The use of statistical methods and machine learning techniques will also be demonstrated to provide a unique future direction for nucleosynthesis studies to infer nuclear properties from observation. Since nucleosynthesis outcomes encode the interplay between nuclear physics and astrophysics, such studies present valuable opportunities for theory, experiment, and observation to inform one another and drive progress in each area.
