Title: How Experiment and Observations Informed the Nature of Hot and Dense Matter

Abstract: Twenty-five years ago, the nature of hot and dense matter was wholly unknown, leaving theorists significant freedom to generate a plethora of models for strongly-interacting hot and dense matter. The modern view has changed considerably. An expansive network of nuclear experiments, nuclear theory, and astronomical observations has led to a much smaller model space. This has led to significant advances in our understanding of astrophysical phenomena and the production of heavy nuclei. In this talk, I will describe the data and observations which go into the equation of state of hot and dense matter. I will show how this information led to the correct prediction of the tidal deformability of neutron stars prior to the observation of gravitational waves from a neutron star merger by LIGO. I will also show how shrinking equation of state uncertainties have advanced models of the production of heavy nuclei in r-process nucleosynthesis. Finally, I will describe how experiments, theory, and observations are most likely to continue to advance neutron star and r-process science.
