Title: Ab initio prediction of astrophysical reaction rates and integrating microscopic calculations within few-body methods
Abstract: Few minutes after the Big Bang, nuclei were already present and ever since their static and dynamic properties have driven the creation of all visible matter. Understanding nuclear properties is fundamental for answering the key questions of how protons and neutrons come together to form atomic nuclei, how these nuclei evolve, and which phenomena emerge under extreme astrophysical conditions. Ab initio theories in which nucleons are treated as active degrees of freedom and using two- and three-nucleon interactions from chiral-EFT can now make predictions for nuclei as heavy as lead isotopes. Due to their short lifetime, most nuclei are studied experimentally through indirect techniques, often by making them collide with a heavy target before they have the time to fall apart. To refine our understanding, to guide experimental efforts, and to support the interpretation of measurements, reactions rates need to be accurately predicted. In this colloquium, I will present recent ab initio predictions of reactions of astrophysical interest involving light nuclei at low energies. I will also discuss how ab initio predictions can be integrated within few-body methods to predict reactions at higher energies, which cannot yet be described by ab initio theories.
