Title: Hunting the missing matter of the Universe with ultra-sensitive cryogenic detectors
Abstract: The understanding of the missing matter in our Universe is one of the most pressing questions in particle physics today. Among different approaches, one possibility is to directly search for hypothetical Dark Matter (DM) particles, detecting the nuclear recoils arising from elastic scattering between DM particles and target nuclei. CRESST (Cryogenic Rare Event Search with Superconducting Thermometers) is a cryogenic experiment located at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy) that uses scintillating CaWO4 crystals as target material for elastic DM-nucleus scattering. Thanks to this approach, nuclear recoils as low as 10 eV can be detected, allowing for unprecedented sensitivity in the search for sub-GeV/c2 DM candidates. In this seminar, the features of cryogenic detectors and the most recent results from CRESST will be presented, together with the perspective for the next phase of the experiment, which also includes sensitivity for a large number of rare event searches.
