Title: ZEUGMA: The New Wave -- A New Approach Toward Ultrahigh-Gradient Laser Acceleration of Charged Particles in Vacuum
Abstract: We present a nascent concept for laser-in-vacuum acceleration of electrons, which would utilize several existing, economical laser and optical technologies, in order to ultimately achieve accelerating field gradients of multiple GV/m while maintaining high beam quality. Laser light is injected into Fabry-Perot cavities maintained between stable pendular mirrors within an electron beamline vacuum -- which would be somewhat similar to multiple miniature, focusing versions of the LIGO Fabry-Perot optical cavities -- with the laser light within each cavity both focused on, and propagating in a direction orthogonal to, the electron beam, and with its light polarization parallel to the electron beam. We present the results of some initial toy simulations, plans for improved simulations (and nascent plans for some future initial experimental tests), and ultimate future goals for this concept including linear accelerators both at large (~1 km, ~few TeV) but still economical scales at the energy frontier, and at much smaller scales for medical and other purposes.
